05/17/2011 - Bremen, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Werder Bremen announced Tuesday it will not offer a new deal to former German international Torsten Frings, who has spent the majority of his club career with the Bundesliga side.
Frings, 34, first played at Werder Bremen from 1997-2002 and rejoined the club in 2006. He played at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in between his six- year stints with Bremen. His current contract expires this June.
The long-time German midfielder, who made 79 appearances for his country, was offered a coaching role by Bremen, but it is unclear if Frings will continue playing with another side.
"Owing to both sporting and financial reasons, the club management, including coach Thomas Schaaf, has agreed not to offer a new contract to Torsten Frings," Bremen executive director Klaus Allofs said.
"We're keen to give him the chance to become a coach, provided he doesn't choose to continue his playing career with another club."
Frings has made more than 400 appearances in the Bundesliga, but his salary is reported to be one of the highest at the club. Bremen struggled this season in the Bundesliga and failed to advance to European competition, which will limit its funds.
"Torsten has been the life and soul of the club for many years and he gave his all for Werder Bremen. We had to weigh up all the pros and cons in making this decision and we had extensive discussions with him. I agreed with Klaus Allofs that this was the right way to proceed," Schaaf said.
