Caps aim to avoid fourth straight loss in clash with Canadiens

01/05/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Washington Capitals will try to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season when they welcome the Montreal Canadiens for tonight's clash at Verizon Center.

The Capitals, who are first in the Southeast Division with 54 points, have lost their last three games and are one defeat away from tying a four-game slide from October 6-12. Washington had won three straight prior to this current slide.

After losing a home decision to Carolina last Monday, the Caps were handed a pair of setbacks on the West Coast. San Jose slammed Washington by a 5-2 score on Wednesday and Washington was then dealt a close loss Saturday in Los Angeles.

Jonathan Quick made 26 stops to lead the Kings to the 2-1 decision over the Caps at the Staples Center. Mike Green scored the lone goal for Washington while Michal Neuvirth was charged with both goals on 19 shots for the Capitals.

"The last two periods we were pretty good," said Washington coach Bruce Boudreau. "I think we limited them to seven shots. It's still no consolation when you lose, but it's a better effort than we've been giving in the past couple games."

Tonight's test marks the first of two straight on home ice for the Caps, who are 12-3-3 as the host this season.

The Canadiens will try to rebound from a close loss as they dropped a 1-0 decision Sunday against visiting Buffalo. Montreal had won six of its previous seven games prior to the setback against the Sabres.

Tim Connolly scored the lone goal of the game in the second period and Ryan Miller stopped all 30 shots to lead the Sabres.

Carey Price turned in a solid effort, stopping 29-of-30 shots for Montreal.

"It's frustrating to lose, but we did a fairly good job defensively," Price said. "We didn't give up a whole lot of opportunities. It was a shutdown game on both ends."

Montreal will be without forwards Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn as the brothers are both sidelined with lower-body injuries. The Kostitsyns will not make the trip to D.C. and neither will defenseman Ryan O'Byrne, who had to leave the team due to family reasons.

The Canadiens are 12-10-1 as the guest this year, but will be away from Montreal for just one game. The Habs will begin a four-game homestand Thursday against Florida.

Montreal and the Caps have split two meetings this year with each club winning a test on the road. Washington has taken five of seven and six of nine overall in the series and the Habs have dropped six of 10 in D.C.
