Cubs continue homestand against Braves

Baseball Betting Lines

07/06/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Cubs will resume their 11-game homestand tonight with the first of three straight games versus the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field.

Chicago has won four of its last five games and opened the residency by winning three of four meetings with Milwaukee, including Sunday's 8-2 victory thanks to home runs from Derrek Lee and Jake Fox. Lee ended with three RBI and Fox knocked in a pair of runs for the Cubs, who sit 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central lead. Chicago will host the Cardinals for four games from July 10-12 to close out the residency.

Mike Fontenot and Kosuke Fukudome each had two hits and an RBI, while starting pitcher Ted Lilly earned the win with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball. Lilly allowed nine hits, struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk for his eighth win of the season. He will be the lone representative of the Cubs for next week's All-Star Game in St. Louis.

"I'm excited and looking forward to it, and I hope I get an opportunity to pitch in it -- that'd be fun, too," Lilly told the team's site. "Maybe we'll win so the Cubs can get some home-field advantage in the World Series."

Randy Wells is pitching like a World Series MVP and will try to stretch his current winning streak to four straight starts Monday. Wells made it three wins in a row the last time out on July 1 at Pittsburgh, as he gave up a run and six hits in seven innings of a 4-1 triumph.

The right-hander is 3-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 10 starts this season, and will face Atlanta for the second time this season and in his career. Wells did not record a decision in a 6-5 loss at the Braves on June 2, when he yielded two runs -- one earned -- on two hits in seven innings of work.

Atlanta lost the last two meetings of a three-game series at Washington over the weekend and suffered a 5-3 setback in Sunday's series finale. Derek Lowe absorbed the loss for allowing four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

"That's not your typical Lowe performance at all, and he's had a couple of them," Braves manager Bobby Cox said on the team's Web site. "The sinker sometimes sinks; other times, it ends up over the plate."

Nate McLouth homered and ended with two RBI, while Martin Prado added a four- hit effort for Atlanta, which is tied with New York at four games behind Philadelphia for the NL East lead. The Braves had won five straight before losing the last two meetings in DC and will also visit Colorado for four games on the current trek. Catcher Brian McCann earned his fourth All-Star Game bid and is the lone Atlanta player on the NL roster.

Cox will hand the ball to Jair Jurrjens tonight and he got back into the win column the last time out on July 1 versus Philadelphia. Jurrjens held the Phillies to one unearned run and one hit in seven innings of an 11-1 victory, and was 0-4 in five starts before improving to 6-6 in 17 starts.

Jurrjens, a right-hander, is 3-2 in eight road starts this season and has never faced the Cubs in his career.

Atlanta has won two of three matchups with Chicago this season, but the Cubs are 10-4 over the past 14 meetings between the clubs.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
