09/09/2007 - Phoenix, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin singled home the eventual game-winning run to cap a five-run fourth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-8, in the second of three straight games at Chase Field.
Arizona kept its advantage over the Padres at two games for first place in the National League West. San Diego beat Colorado, 3-1, Saturday. The Cardinals fell two games behind Milwaukee and Chicago, both of which won on Saturday, for the top spot in the NL Central.
Conor Jackson and Stephen Drew each had a three-run homer for Arizona, which notched a 4-2 win Friday in the series opener and has won four in a row. Eric Byrnes went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
Micah Owings, who has lost his last two decisions, allowed seven runs - only two earned - on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in just 2 2/3 innings for Arizona. Dana Eveland (1-0) got his first win of the season by inducing a Jim Edmonds flyout in the fourth. Jose Valverde tossed a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 44th save in 51 chances this season.
Aaron Miles hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who lost for the fourth time in six games. Albert Pujols ended 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run in the loss.
Former closer Braden Looper failed to win his third straight outing, allowing seven runs - six earned - on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings for the Cards. Todd Wellemeyer (3-3) got the final two outs in the fourth after allowing a pair of runs to absorb the loss.
Trailing 7-4, the D-backs grabbed a 9-7 lead with a five-spot in the fourth. Drew's three-run homer to right-center field prompted Wellemeyer to replace Looper, but the reliever walked Chris Young and Byrnes. Jackson then reached on a force attempt after a missed catch error by Miles. Miguel Montero's sacrifice fly scored Young, and pinch-hitter Quentin singled home Byrnes.
The Cards got a run in the fifth off reliever Brandon Medders, who walked Chris Duncan and surrendered a single to Miles before pinch-hitter Ryan Ludwick scored pinch-runner Mike Maroth with an infield single.
Arizona plated three runs in the first, as Young and Byrnes both singled before Jackson's three-run homer to left field on a 2-1 pitch.
St. Louis exploded for seven runs in the third. Looper led off with a walk, David Eckstein got hit by a pitch, and Rick Ankiel's groundout put runners at the corners for Pujols, who tripled home both baserunners. Edmonds next walked, Duncan reached on a fielding error by Owings scoring another run, and Miles belted a three-run shot to right field on the first pitch he saw.
Kelly Stinnett's double was enough for the Diamondbacks, who brought in Jailen Peguero to stop the bleeding. But, Looper lined an RBI single before getting thrown out at second for the frame's final out.
Arizona answered with a run in the home half, as Byrnes doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Stinnett.

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
